Know Your Brakes
Although we’ll take care of all your vehicle’s brake repair needs, Automotive Customs will provide you with the basic information you may find helpful in a service-related conversation. Your automobile’s braking system works well, stop after stop. When you press the pedal, fluid is forced from the master cylinder reservoir by a level and piston through the brake lines toward the smaller cylinder at each wheel. The hydraulic force at each of those locations moves a brake caliper. The caliper holds a brake pad forced against the rotor; a large disc inset behind each wheel. The friction between the pad and the rotor lets you slow down. While you won’t typically need brake repair extremely often, it’s important to take care of your brakes as soon as attention is needed. Our team at Automotive Customs can check your brakes during routine service and inspection visits. There are also signs you should be aware of between scheduled appointments. The most frequently observed is squealing during braking. This often indicates the need for brake pad replacement. Though metallic and durable, pads wear thin with use. You should also see us if you notice a general increase in stopping distances. Another concern is vibration during braking. You may notice this if a rotor, a component that should have a smooth surface, has become warped due to excessive heat. Pulling to one side during braking may point to a damaged component on one side, making the breaking strengths unequal. Be aware of a burning smell, as well. Although this can have varying origins, a stuck brake caliper or an accidentally engaged emergency brake may be to blame.
